Surrender the plates or transfer them to another vehicle through your local DMV office.

You must submit a Notice of Sale within 30 days to your local tax collector's office to remove your liability for the vehicle after the sale.
Don't cancel your insurance until you've taken care of your plates and registration for this state. Once those steps are done, contact your insurer to remove the vehicle from your policy.
