Cancel your plates online through the DMV. Plates can be disposed of at your discretion.
Is there anything else I need to do?
You may be eligible for a refund if there is at least one full year remaining on your registration. Once your registration is canceled, you can contact the DMV to verify.
Don't cancel your insurance until you've cancelled your registration with the state. Once that's done, contact your insurer to remove the vehicle from your policy.
